David Eddings...

I just found out today that one of my favorite authors, David Eddings, has passed away. http://www.fictionmatters.com/2009/06/03/david-eddings-dead-at-77/

I started reading his books when they came out in the 80's. My favorite series was of course the Belgariad series. I would reread these books every year when I was younger. I think I'll have to go back and read the series again. Once you pick them up, they're hard to put back down again.

He will be so missed by everyone.

Nights in Rodanthe

So I watched the dvd Nights in Rodanthe finally. OMG, I really liked it a lot. SO much that I decided to read the book.

Now I usually have a really big problem when a book gets made into a movie. And I know that they could never fit everything into what is in a book into a movie, cause the movie would be like 3 or 4 days long. LOL My problem is when they don't put in the things I thought were important, or when they change a ton of things for the movie. So normally I'll try to watch the movie first then read the book.

So the movie and the book have relatively the same plot. But the execution of the main plot of the love story were executed much differently. And for the first time ever, I really liked both versions. Mainly because they left out in the movie Amanda's struggle with her own love story.

I'm not sure if it was because it would have been too Notebook-ish. I have to read another one of his books to see if this is a regular theme with Nicholas Sparks.

But I really did like how the movie changed the way the story was told in the book. Because, really, you couldn't get most of what was going on in the book into a movie version. I was annoyed at first when reading the book, but then really liked how they did the movie, and then really liked how the book was written.

So, if you haven't seen or read either, I'd watch the movie first, and don't even try to compare it to the book. Then read the book as a totally different story. It just made me appreciate both versions that way. :)

The Millenium Falcon

So, while waiting for my dad at the VA hospital, I read The Millenium Falcon. It's new Star Wars book. And I loved it. I now have to go back and read the books that I'm missing in between the last one I read in the Star Wars Universe.

I love the fact that Han, Leia, and their granddaughter are researching the history of the Millenium Falcon. And I also love how they incorporate different characters from all the movies and books into this one.

It's fun reading the stories of the previous owners of the Falcon, and just how special she is to each person. She is a very special ship, and has always been my favorite in the series. I don't know why, but whenever you see her on screen or read about her in other books, you just wish you were on her with the characters. And you tend to care about her too. Well, I do anyway. LOL

If you love the Star Wars Universe, this is a must read. :)

Quiet day...

I'm enjoying a quiet day at home. Although I did have to go to the library. I finished Chopping Spree today. And since I was reminded that Monday is a Holiday, I thought I'd trek on out to the library for the last book in the series...Dark Tort.

I was able to find that one, plus they had the new Star Wars book: The Millenium Falcon. I was excited because I just saw the book in Borders a few weeks ago. And eventhough I haven't caught up to all the books in between that one and the one that I last read, I thought I'd better borrow it. LOL The Millenium Falcon is my favorite Star Wars ship of them all, so I think I'm really going to like this one. I still have to catch up with the books in between. Am not looking forward to reading the book where Chewbacca dies. I even forget which one that is, but I'm not going to like reading that one. I can tell already. ;)

I'm going to arrange things around the house, finish up a few sewing projects, and hopefully start up some new ones.

It's still gorgeous outside. At the library they were making bird feeders out of pine cones and peanut butter. How fun is that? I think I'm gonna find some peanut butter and bird seed....

The Library

I just got back from the Library. And I haven't been to one in years. My friend Kristen got me started on Diane Mott Davidson's books. She's a mystery writer whose main character is a caterer. And she's always finding someone murdered on her jobs. Ok, not all of her jobs, but you'd think that if you're a caterer, you'd see a dead body 1 out of 5 jobs you're doing! LOL

And while you're reading, you'll come across a recipe of something that she's cooking for dinner or for one of her catering jobs. I really want to try some of her recipes. :)

Anyway, I've been going through her books rather quickly, and realized that I'm running out of books. And instead of buying more books to have in the house, I figured that maybe I should go to the library to check them out instead. Then I don't have to buy the books, and then have them filling up my shelves. Cause really, I have so many books, I couldn't read them all again in my lifetime.

So it was an experience for me. Gone are the old card catalogs (See, told you it's been a long time). They've been replaced by computers. And now they have self-service scanners to check the books out for you. How cool is that?? I'm usually not big on the self-scanners because I figure that it's putting someone out of a job. But I have to admit, these are very cool. and with the amount of people in the library, you do need to have something like that, especially when there isn't the money in the budget to hire a whole lot of staff.

I love that there are CD's and DVD's there now, and I still have to explore the non-fiction section.

Reading and books

Now, do you all love to read?? I always remember having a book with me. Well, my mom used to always read to me when I was young. I can remember being sick with some kind of eye thing, and she would actually come and read to me when my sisters were gone to school. How cool was that? LOL

And I always had a comic book, a scholastic reading book. Remember getting those book catalogs when you were in grade school? And then ordering books from them, and getting them later. I would devour those books. I read every single Little House on the Prairie book. And the Phantom Tollbooth was my absolute favorite. Must have read that a bajillion times. And Charlie and the chocolate factory? Charlie and the great glass elevator?? I wonder if those books are still in the basement. I would even read in the car. Can't do that now, but would totally do that when I was young.

OMG, I discovered Sci Fi/Fantasy books when I was in high school thanks to a classmate of mine. I still have my first sci/fi book: Dune. I read it so many times, the binding on it is scotched taped together cause I read it so much. Couldn't buy another copy, just kept scotch taping the one I had. LOL Really! The whole cover is scotched taped. LOL And read the 2 sequels: Dune Messiah and the Children of Dune. Stopped there though cause I wasn't into all the other ones after that. I fall in love with characters, and that's it. Can't go into their ancestors unless I like them a lot too.

Have you read the Dragonriders of Pern series? my favorite.

LOVE anything by David and Leigh Eddings.

And I wish Melanie Rawn would finish her series. I haven't started reading that one till I know all the books are out, cause I really don't like waiting for the last book. I mean it was so hard waiting for each Harry Potter Book to come out. OMG, I haven't been like that since I started reading David Eddings books.

And I won't even start on comic books. LOL
